WHY IS KNOWLEDGE IMPORTANT FOR IFAD?
IFAD's knowledge is drawn from over 40 years’ experience in rural development and through research gathered from impact assessments, monitoring and independent evaluations. These resources and knowledge inform IFAD's operations, partnerships, policy engagement and global advocacy for the benefit of rural people in developing countries.
Our most valuable knowledge and experience are drawn from development practice – especially from the rural development projects we finance through loans and grants. Thematic knowledge in priority areas such as nutrition, climate change, social inclusion, and private sector engagement, is developed across countries, and through networks and partnerships – led by our team of technical specialists.
Staff knowledge and expertise are also a valuable resource – so ensuring knowledge flows, collaboration and learning across distances is crucial given that IFAD is a decentralized organization.

IFAD's KM PROGRAMME
Our KM strategy is designed to help us improve how we generate, acquire, share, use and re-use the best available knowledge that is based on both evidence and practice – for better results and impact. People are at the core of the strategy in recognition that knowledge resides in people, not repositories. Therefore, we are emphasizing the importance of peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and learning, and promoting approaches like communities of practice and networks.
The action plan to implement the KM strategy describes a range of inter-connected activities in three broad categories: knowledge generation, knowledge use and enabling environment. |
IFAD's KM Strategy and its accompanying three-year action plan will help IFAD to leverage the best available and most relevant knowledge, based on both evidence and practice, from its own work, with partners and from other external sources. It was developed based on extensive consultation, a critical review of experience and lessons learned over the past decade, and a review of relevant experience in KM in other international organizations.
